If you’re a pet lover planning your big day, it’s only natural to want your furry friend there to celebrate with you. But the truth is, weddings aren’t the right environment for every pet.
As much as you may want them by your side, sometimes the kindest, most loving decision is to let them stay home or be cared for off-site.
Here are a few reasons why that might be the best choice—for them and for you.
They’re anxious in unfamiliar environments
Weddings are full of unfamiliar sounds, scents and people. Even the calmest pets can feel unsettled in a completely new setting.
Signs your pet may be overwhelmed include:
-
Shaking or panting
-
Trying to hide or escape
-
Clingy behaviour or pacing
If your pet is naturally anxious or highly sensitive to change, they’ll likely be more comfortable at home in a familiar, quiet space.
They’re reactive to noise or large crowds
Think about your pet’s reaction to loud music, clapping, cheering or a large group of people.
Weddings are joyful and exciting—but to a pet, especially one that startles easily, they can feel chaotic and overwhelming.
Ask yourself:
-
Do they bark or become nervous in social settings?
-
Are they afraid of sudden noises or unfamiliar voices?
If your pet tends to be reactive, they may not enjoy the experience—and neither will you if you’re worried about their wellbeing.
They don’t get along well with other animals or kids
If the venue has dogs or other pets on the property, or if your celebration includes lots of children, consider how your pet typically responds.
-
Are they territorial around other dogs?
-
Do they feel overwhelmed or defensive around kids?
Weddings are not the place to test how your pet handles new social dynamics. It’s better to play it safe than risk a stressful or unpredictable situation.
There’s no one available to care for them during the day
A wedding day is packed with events, emotions and logistics. Unless you have a dedicated pet handler on hand, your pet’s needs may go unnoticed in the bustle.
Pets need:
✔️ Regular bathroom breaks
✔️ Access to water and food
✔️ Time to rest and decompress
If no one is assigned to manage all that, it’s kinder to let them stay somewhere calm and safe.
You love your pet—and that’s exactly why it’s okay to make a decision that puts their comfort first.
Leaving them at home doesn’t mean leaving them out. You can still:
-
Feature them in your stationery or signage
-
Wear cufflinks or a bouquet charm in their honour
-
Name a signature cocktail after them
-
Include their photo in your decor or ceremony
- Feature a custom pet cake topper
What matters most is making a choice that feels right for both of you. After all, love means knowing when to say, “You don’t have to be there to still be part of it.”
